This month, we had the chance to try food colour dusts by Roxy & Rich.
The new collections are E171-free, sold in a wide range of shades, and are incredibly versatile! The dusts are available in three different styles, each with their own unique qualities.
To test them, we made a sugar jewel-encrusted party cake using 10 of the 16 colours provided. After moulding brooches and jewels using sugarpaste, we decided to first begin with a dry-brushing test. Combining food dusts with a dry brush is ideal for colouring sugar flowers or adding shading to sculpted cakes.
We used Red Sparkle Highlighter Dust on one brooch, and Pastel Red Satin Dust on another. Both created stunning but very different results. Using the Highlighter Dust dry added a fainter colour, but with more sparkle, whereas the Satin Dust created fuller colour coverage with
more of a matte finish and a faint shimmer of lustre. We really like the options this opens up to the artist!
Next, we tested the Gold & Green Multi-effects Highlighter. This is a very interesting product as you can achieve two completely different results depending on how you use it.
Dry brushing created a gorgeous antique-style gold with subtle hints of green, but when added to alcohol, it forms an exceptionally opulent deep golden emerald colour! Definitely one of our favourites!
Our next test was for two gold shades. We took Royal Gold Highlighter Dust and Bright Sun Satin Dust, then mixed with alcohol to form a paint. Again, two different styles were made here. The
Highlighter Dust achieved a lovely strong shiny gold, whereas the Satin Dust created a slightly lighter gold, which would be the perfect base for layering more shading for an aged effect.
To finish our cake, we mixed the dusts with alcohol to form paints in the following colours: Purple Bronze and Gold & Green (Multi-effects Highlighter); Sparkle Bronze, Royal Gold, Red Sparkle (Highlighter Dust); Vintage Copper, Eggplant, Orange Creamsicle, Bright Sun, Pastel Red (Satin Dust). We applied these to the cake using piping gel, then added black sugar pearls to finish.
Overall, we couldn’t be more impressed with the food colour dusts from Roxy & Rich. They’re super simple to use, incredibly versatile, E17 free, and allow for endless possibilities with professional results! Very highly recommended!
