Welcome to our Floral Issue!
This issue is our annual floral themed edition and it really is a beautiful one, with so many flower inspired cakes for you to make using lots of different techniques. Our first project, and the star on our cover this month, is by Sugar Cakes. This tutorial covers a huge range of sugar flowers and techniques, including some brilliant texturing that can be used for all sorts of occasion cakes. Next, we have an easy project from Cakey Bakey Cakes, with simple hand painted flowers and stained glass effect butterflies – simple, but really effective.
Dawn, from Dinklydoodle Designs, features twice in the magazine this month! Firstly, she has created an enchanting Eden in cake in her tutorial using CakeFrame to bring to life her garden design. Dawn is also in our Social Snippets feature, as she made an incredible flying helicopter cake for the East Anglian Air Ambulance base opening. The Queen and Prince William were there to open the base and were completely wowed by Dawn’s floating cake!
We have a lovely cookie project from Dolce Sentire in this issue; it incorporates the use of stencils, stamping and piping to create a beautiful lavender decorated cookie. Pretty piped flowers can also be found in the Walled Rose Garden Cake tutorial by Inga Ruby Cakes – a simple, delicate design on a two tier cake. My favourite project this month is Painted Petals & Bold Blooms from HAVE+SOME+CAKE. A perfect cake for a wedding celebration, it includes lots of clear and easy to follow steps to help you recreate this beautiful cake.
We revisit quilling this month and have two brilliant floral designs for you to try using different quilling techniques. A bold gold on blue cake, by Julia Marie Cakes, and a pretty pastel design, by Kosmic Custom Cakes. Taking floristry in another direction, our How’d They Do That?! by CAKE! is all glitz and glamour with its ruffles and sequins look.
As it is the floral issue, we had to interview a sugar flower veteran – make sure you read our interview with Chef Nicholas Lodge, who has been in the industry for over 35 years and has made some stunning cakes. We also have a Masterclass for you this month, this time to broaden your cake repertoire into airbrushing. Clairella Cakes uses the Rainbow Dusts’ Colour Flo range to create a trendy summer cake and takes you through all the skills needed when using an airbrush.
In the expert hot seat, we have James Roselle – this sugar flower master answers your questions on achieving sugar flower success. Also in Elevenses this month, we have reviewed Cake Bag, a monthly service that delivers a package of themed cake decorating products to your door! See what we got up to when we tried it out in the Product Review. Finally, we are giving away a big bundle of brilliant floral cutters and products from FMM Sugarcraft. Just solve the floral-themed crossword for your chance to win!
Enjoy the issue!
