Cake Con International Collaboration

Cake Con International is back at it again with their latest collaboration bringing eclectic cake designs with your favourite comic book characters, from Asterix to Deadpool. One of the collaboration founders, Mayra Estrada, tells us more…

Tell us about your collaboration

Cassandra Rice and I formed this collaboration in 2016, but this year was definitely epic. Our theme was inspired by the much-loved comics, tv series characters and gaming characters known at San Diego Comic Con. Selecting characters for our inspiration is fun since there are so many to choose from and new ones every year. Each and every artist has gone beyond our expectations with their creations and we have created amazing friendships. What you don’t see is behind the scenes, where we share our tears, sleepless hours and frustrations when we run into complications with our pieces. The love and support we give each other to lift our spirits up and continue to the finish line is amazing. We have learned and grown together and the end results is rewarding. We can’t thank everyone enough for all their hard work in making this the best collaboration ever!

What inspired you to do this theme?

Comic Con international was our source of inspiration. This is our second year creating much loved characters known at Comic Con International which is a yearly worldwide event.

Tell us about a few of the pieces that have been made

Jaylah from Star Trek was life size and completely edible as well as Ghost Rider, Kier–Valkyrie and so many more. All of the pieces were amazing!

How many members were in your collaboration?

We initially had 45 and due to unexpected events, we lost a few.

How did you decide on this group of people?

We select artists that have diversity with both sculpting as well as cake designs.

Did anything go wrong during the process?

When hosting a collaboration, you encounter losing some amazing talent due to unforeseen commitments last minute. I am thankful that Cassandra Rice is an amazing co-admin and cannot thank the amazing group of sugar artists enough for all of their hard work.

If you were to do it again, what would you do differently?

We would love to do this again. The only thing I would change the due date for submissions.
