THE YEAR 2020 SPONSORED BY THE CAKE DECORATING COMPANY

What a year it has been! We’re really looking forward to seeing what you design in this category!
– Cakes must be based on an event, movement or a moment that has happened in 2020
– To give you some ideas, this could include: COVID-19 and lockdown, Black Lives Matter, Keyworkers, or something personal to you
– This can be any style of cake or cookie
– Please also include up to 200 words about your entry in the contest form

BUST-A-MOVE! SPONSORED BY ROXY & RICH

A sculpted bust cake that is head and shoulders above the rest!
– This must be a bust that only has the head and shoulders, not a full body sculpture
– Based on a famous face or character
– The inspiration picture of the famous person must be included
– Please also include up to 200 words about your entry in the contest form

ILLUSION CAKES SPONSORED BY RENSHAW ACADEMY

We want to see your best illusion cakes! We want to question whether your entry really is cake!
– Your cake must be to scale and your entry must have a photo of your cake next to the actual object for comparison
– For example, if you create a banana cake, please photograph it next to an actual banana!
– Please also include up to 200 words about your entry in the contest form

COLOURS OF THE RAINBOW! SPONSORED BY SUGARIN

Wow us with a rainbow-themed design!
– Be bold and incorporate at least 5 colours of the rainbow

Wow, we really need these to lift us up this year! What is your favourite quote? We want to see it recreated on your entry!
– Find a quote, motto or mantra and it include it on your entry

CELEBRATING 100 EDITIONS OF CAKE MASTERS MAGAZINE SPONSORED BY CAKE STUFF

We are so excited about this category as we will be celebrating 100 editions of the magazine in January 2021. Designs for this category must be a one-tier cake celebrating 100 editions!
– The winning cake will have a special feature in our 100th edition, in January 2021
– Please include 8-12 step images and instructions detailing how to make your cake or how to make key elements of the cake
– The design must include the number ‘100’
– We want to see your celebration cakes! Go crazy with sprinkles, toppers, and other party decorations
– Please include up to 200 words about your entry in the contest form

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. What is the Cake Masters Magazine Cake Design Contest?
    An online cake contest where you will need to submit good quality photos of your competition entry. This competition closes on September 14th 2020.
  2. Is there an entry fee?
    Yes. There is a fee. 25% of all fees will go to our chosen charity, Icing Smiles.
  3. How many categories can I enter?
    As many as you like! You are able to enter all the categories if you wish and you may submit up to 3 different entries per category.
  4. How do I enter?
    The competition is now closed.
  5. Where can I find the contest form?
    You can find it the contest form here.
  6. Can I use a dummy?
    Yes, you can use a foam or a dummy as the base of your cake.
  7. Can I use a cake that I have made before?
    Yes, if it fits the theme, you can. If you are entering a cake you made previously into the Illusion Cake category and are not able to take a photo of the cake next to the real object, please instead submit two photographs, one of the cake and one of the real object.
  8. When do I have to submit by?
    Please send your entries (including photos and contest forms) to content@cakemastersmagazine.com by September 14th. No changes can be made after submission.
  9. Can I post my entry on social media?
    No you cannot. Judging is done blind and you must not share on social media, even in closed or private groups. If you are entering a competition piece you have shared on social media before, that is allowed, but you must not reshare or repost the cake announcing you are entering.
  10. How is it judged?
    Judging will be done by a panel and the winner will be based on the collective score. Scores will be based on interpretation of the theme, originality and creativity, overall appeal, technique and execution. The judging panel is Chef Nicholas Lodge, Rosie Cake-Diva, Ben Cullen from The BakeKing and Marta Hidalgo from Peccata Minuta. Judging will take place from 17th September and once judging is completed, all entries will be uploaded onto Facebook for the People’s Choice voting to start.
  11. What is the prize?
    There will be one winner per category. Each category winner will receive a prize of £500/$650/€550. Prize money will be paid via bank transfer or PayPal.
  12. Will there be a People’s Choice?
    Yes! All entries will be put on Facebook. The entry with the most reactions will win People’s Choice and will be published in the magazine
  13. Can I use non-edible items?
    Yes you can use non-toxic or removable items as details on your entries.
  14. Can I enter cupcakes or cookies?
    Yes you can, You can send a collection of up to 12 cookies or cupcakes.
  15. Do I have to fill in the form?
    Yes. This will give the judges more of an insight into what you have submitted.

General Contest Rules

  • Think carefully about the theme and be creative!
  • Dummies or foam bases can be used.
  • Think about the overall presentation of your piece, the background of your cake, the lighting when you take your photo, covering your board and finishing touches like ribbon.
  • You can use a cake you have made before, please ensure it fits the category you are entering.
  • You can enter a cake that you have entered into a cake competition before, please ensure it fits the category. We do encourage you to try and create something new! Please ensure your photos are of the cake on its own and not displayed at a show with other entries or awards on display.
  • Photos with watermarks or logos, where is it clear who has made the entry, will be disqualified with no refund.
  • It is in your best interest to include 200 words about your entry as this will help the judges understand your theme when judging.
  • Entries must not be posted on social media as judging is blind. Please do not post in groups even if they are private or closed.
  • Sharing of your entry can only be done after we have announced judging has been completed.
  • After blind judging is completed, all the entries will be uploaded on social media for the People’s Choice voting to start. Only once the entries are uploaded can you share your entries on social media.
  • People’s Choice will be based on the number of total reactions on the post not just LIKES
  • The People’s Choice winner will be featured in Cake Masters Magazine. There is no prize money for this award.
  • There will be one winner per category.
  • The prize money for each winner is £500/$650/€550 and there will be six winners in total
  • As this is our first time running this competition, we will not be able to provide individual feedback for the entries.
  • Entries must be made by you. You cannot submit photos of cakes that do not belong to you. If it is flagged and proven to be someone else’s work you will be disqualified with no refund and not permitted to enter other Cake Masters Magazine competitions.
  • Any entries that are deemed offensive will be disqualified with no refund.
  • If you change your mind about entering, no refunds will be given and your fee will be fully donated to charity.

Our judge Chef Nicholas Lodge has offered kindly to volunteer feedback to entries. He is happy to answer emails requesting feedback between filming, classes and working commitments. Please email your competition number and photo of entry to Chef@nicholaslodge.com and he will kindly come back to you as soon as he can.

  1. I sent have paid my entry fee but have some questions about the contest form, I see no where to attach pictures under each catagory and no instructions of how to include the pictures. Please let me know so I can get this turned in before the deadline. Thanks
