This month we interview Mayen Orido, from Way Beyond Cakes. Mayen is known for her gravity defying cakes and creative cake ideas. Mayen gives us her top tips and an insight into her cake filled world.
Originally with a teaching and field sales background – Mayen did not do cakes at that time, and learned only when she wanted to make them for her family. It came to Mayen at a point in her life when she left her full time job to be a stay at home mum. Mayen’s hobby evolved into a business and changed from making cakes full time, to teaching cake decorating.
Mayen shares her top three tips below:
1. Try. You never know what you are capable of until you actually try it yourself. You can read on techniques and designs but, until you actually start doing it, then you won’t know which works best for you. What could be great for someone may not always work for you.
2. Be patient. Things will go wrong, it is a given. You will need to be focused enough to know that, in every little mishap, you will learn something new. As you go forward, you accumulate the learning you make from each creation.
3. Every once in a while, it would be nice to think outside the box when it comes to cake design. The more you explore this, the easier it becomes for you to design your own cake and come up with unique things.
