This month, we had the chance to try the new Metallic Rose Gold Lustre from Rainbow Dust.
Adding a 100% edible luxurious shine to your cakes has never been easier!
To test the lustre, we decided to make a fabric inspired mini cake with a push in topper.
We took our 4×4” round cake and covered in a layer of white sugarpaste just slightly thicker than usual to allow for a deeper texture. Before the paste had time to dry, we began creating ridges using shapers and a dresden tool all around the cake to form a ruched fabric effect. Once happy with the finish, we set aside to firm up slightly.
Next, we took out the Metallic Rose Gold Lustre and added a small amount to a bowl with enough clear alcohol to form an edible paint. We love the shade of this lustre; the rose gold has a gorgeous shine and was so quick and easy to transform from a soft powder to a luxurious glossy edible paint.
Taking a flat paintbrush, we started painting around the cake in one direction until completely covered. At this point, you can wait for everything to dry and add another coat but we were more than happy with one layer – the lustre sat on the sugarpaste beautifully!
After the paint had dried fully, we took a larger fluffy brush and lightly brushed away any excess build up of paint for a smooth satin effect. We were really impressed with the results. Combining a rose gold tone with a soft luxury lustre creates an absolutely stunning and high-quality professional finish.
To make the topper, we began by adding two different sizes of white sugar pearls into a small pot along with some of the Rose Gold Lustre. We swirled the pot around to coat the pearls and then added a small amount of alcohol swirling again. Using lustres, or any of the Rainbow Dust powder colours, is a great way to create your own shades of sugar pearls. After the colour had been applied, we tipped everything onto aluminium foil and allowed to dry completely.
Whilst the sugar pearls were drying, we formed a heart topper using a few strands of florist wire and coated in a thick layer of piping gel. After the pearls had dried, we placed the topper into the mix sprinkling more all over until everything was coated. To make the wires food safe, we carefully inserted into the top of the cake. This created an attractive push in topper in no time at all and paired magnificently with the base.
Overall, we could not be more impressed with the new Metallic Rose Gold Lustre from Rainbow Dust. It’s a truly striking shade, 100% edible, on-trend, available in two different sized pots and is incredibly versatile. Although we loved using this as an edible paint it’s also perfect for dry brushing directly on to any of your sugar decorations to create a luxury satin finish! Very highly recommended!
