This issue is packed with some great tutorials for you to try. First, is our amazing cover cake from Marina Sousa, in association with Marvelous Molds. Marina has created a bold design incorporating the use of several moulds that results in a beautiful cake. Moulds are a quick and easy way to get a huge amount of decoration done. You can then colour and style decorations how you wish to fit the theme of your cake. My favourite is the beautiful Gem Drops mould!
Two very colourful tutorials come from Benny, of City Cakes, and Natasha, of Cakeium. Benny uses a fabulous technique of interlocking panels of sugarpaste to create an abstract work of art! Don’t be put off by how difficult it looks to create, when you get the hang of the interlocking and slotting in, you can create a fabulous tiered cake with this technique. For her exquisite mandala inspired tutorial, Natasha shows us how to use Food Art Pens from the Rainbow Dust range to create a new trend of paisley-esque drawn on design. Included in the magazine are the templates required, which can be adapted to create beautiful cakes!
The final two tutorials show a few ways of achieving fantastic designs with simple techniques. Heidi, of De la Crème Creative Studio, shows us a chic, contemporary cake with black stripes and a decorative glittering cascade of hearts. Whilst Amanda, of Sugar Sugar Cakes, shows us an excellent modern graffiti cake with green and accents of gold. Striking designs, but so easily achievable.
Always a much-loved feature of mine, we have lots of mini interviews from the cake competitors of the Cake International Spring show in Birmingham. I am delighted to also say that we have an exclusive interview with NEW Head Judge Sally Owens, who will be taking over from Brian Taylor this November. We also say farewell to both Brian and Alan, with a note from each of them. Personally, I have loved seeing them in their element at the shows and I wish them all the very best.
In the expert seat we have Jessica Harris – Queen of clean lines and beautiful simplicity! She is answering your questions and sharing her formulas for cake success. Also in Elevenses this month, we are giving you the chance to win a brilliant prize of £102 of products from The Cake Decorating Company. The lucky winner will get to try out the new Silho Cake Mix and Moulds to create eye-catching silhouette decorations for their cakes – make sure you enter the competition!
Geometrics are something we couldn’t be without for a Modern Cakes theme, and we’ve got some great features for you. In How’d They Do That?! this month, we have Yellow Cake Company showing us how to create an awesome 3D Geometric Cascade. It’s so effective… and I think my favourite cake from this feature to date! Lastly, we have a collection of stunning geometric cakes from our readers – a great place to grab some cakey inspiration.
