The Irish Sugarcraft Show 2016

Show highlights from the bi-annual event run by the Dublin Sugarcraft Guild

The Irish Sugarcraft Show is the largest cake show in Ireland and this year it was filled with exhibitor stands, competition entries and spectacular show pieces. Jan Thorpe led a team of judges from the British Sugarcraft Guild in adjudicating over 300 competition pieces, as always taking great care to give each piece the time and consideration it deserved. The standard at the show is always very high and an influx of cakers from around the world to Ireland in recent years has helped push that standard even higher. This year there was also a big “Cead mile failte” (a thousand welcomes) to competitors from the US and mainland Europe. For 2016 the show moved to a larger hall which led to a very relaxed atmosphere and enabled visitors to get good view of everything. Alongside the usual trade stalls and demonstrations there was free children’s workshops, and for the first time this year a very successful artisan food area. Another first for the show was the inclusion of two great collaborations Away with the Fairies and an edible Tribute to 1916.

Best in Show went to Anjali Tambde for this exquisitely detailed monkey

Here are some of the competition cakes that caught our eye.

The show moves to Cork next year before returning to Dublin in 2018. For more information, visit: www.dublinsugarcraftguild.com
